On September 13 and 14, 2019, the St. Petersburg State Academic Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre will bring the Don Quixote ballet, set to music by Ludwig Minkus, at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. This German tour is part of the Russian Seasons international cultural exchange.
The German public will see a legendary production by a world-class danseur from Denmark, Johan Kobborg, who has established himself as a talented choreographer at the world's largest dance venues. The Don Quixote show at the Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre honoured the 200th birth anniversary of Marius Petipa and became one of the most resoundingly successful premières of the 2017-2018 theatre season in Russia, receiving a highly positive response from the St. Petersburg public.
Darmstadt is in for a vibrant and dynamic performance, drenched in the scorching Spanish sun and just as scorching passion. The rapidly progressing plot line and the daring characters will truly shine thanks to the expressive choreography, as well as luxurious scenery, courtesy of the famous French set designer Jérôme Kaplan.
Enamoured with Russian ballet and well-known both as a performer and a choreographer to the public that attends shows at the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres, Johan Kobborg displays a refreshingly new approach to the eternal classics. Thanks to the ballet, the great master's reputation as a paragon of male dance has been augmented by worldwide fame as an attentive interpreter of the cultural heritage left by Marius Ivanovich Petipa, known as 'the Russian Frenchman'.
The main parts are going to be played by Alla Bocharova, Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation; Sofia Matyushenskaya, principal ballerina at our Theatre; and Andrey Sorokin, winner of the St. Petersburg Youth Award. Other stars of the show will include: Elena Chernova; Svetlana Svinko; Andrey Gudyma, winner of the Golden Soffit St. Petersburg Theatre Award; and Denis Klimuk.
Kobborg's production has received well-deserved praise from theatre professionals. The expert judging panel of the Golden Mask National Theatre Award recognised the outstanding achievements of Don Quixote by awarding it as many as seven nominations. The ballet premièred in December of 2017 at two venues in St. Petersburg, and was also included in the Golden Mask festival in Moscow in March of 2019.
The Darmstadt show will have two intermissions and will run for 2 hours 30 minutes overall.
