The Saint Petersburg State Academic Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre plans to make its traditional contribution to Classics at the Palace Square, an annual large-scale gala concert in front of the Winter Palace, celebrating the city's founding anniversary. This year, it will take place on 28 May.
Over the years, guest stars of the show's opera programme have included Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Ildar Abdrazakov, Veronica Dzhioyeva, Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Elīna Garanča, Hibla Gerzmava, Marcelo Álvarez, Roberto Alagna, Aleksandra Kurzak, and many others. In 2021, Classics at the Palace Square will also bring together world-class stars whose names are the highlight of any playbill at the best theatres in the world. This will be the very first gala featuring sopranos Angel Blue and Pretty Yende, tenors Charles Castronovo and Joseph Calleja, bass-baritone Erwin Schrott, and mezzo-soprano Anna Goryachova all on the same stage. The audience will also get to enjoy a performance by Academic Symphony Orchestra of the D. D. Shostakovich St. Petersburg Philharmonia, and the SoGlasiye Youth Choir. As always, Classics at the Palace Square also welcomes vocalists from Saint Petersburg and young rising stars. This year, they will include soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre's Academy of Young Opera Singers, as well as performers from the Mikhailovsky Theatre and the Zazerkalye Theatre.
Aside from the above, Classics at the Palace Square has an annual dance programme, with original show segments by Russia's best choreographic troupes.
The Leonid Yacobson Ballet Company is one of the gala's long-running participants.
