More Masterpieces
On 20 February, the main venue of Alexandrinsky Theatre hosted a ballet miniature recital titled Forever Timeless. Leonid Yacobson's Choreographic Masterpieces.
The show opens with a segment called Classicism-Romanticism, a series of mini-ballets set to music by Mozart, Bellini and Rossini. In the creations of these composers, Yacobson saw the outlines of dance, feather-light and sublimely exquisite. The next part is The Wedding Cortège, a one-act ballet with music by Dmitri Shostakovich and a re-imagining of Marc Chagall’s paintings as living stories. The finale introduces the audience to short ballet sketches from the Rodin cycle. Here, the power of Yacobson’s genius compels marble statues to listen to the music and shake off their seemingly eternal slumber.
All these ballets were painstakingly restored for the 50th anniversary of the first concert programme that Yacobson created for his troupe. Our theatre is the only company to currently perform these particular works of the outstanding choreographer from Leningrad. Ticket sales are already open on the Alexandrinsky Theatre’s website.
