As the year draws to a close, we both reflect on what we have achieved and look to what lies ahead. Having won the competition for a Presidential Fund grant, the Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre is now beginning work on a new two-act ballet, Onegin.

The project application was submitted jointly with the St. Petersburg Pushkin Foundation. Andrian Fadeev will direct the production personally.

Yesterday, 16 December, saw the culmination of Maya and Rodion, a performing arts festival celebrating the outstanding composer Rodion Shchedrin, and his wife and muse, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. The gala at the Bolshoi’s historic venue brought together leading figures of musical theatre from Russia’s two cultural capitals, St. Petersburg and Moscow. As part of the programme, the Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre presented its one-act ballet, Cheeky Chastushki, set to music by Rodion Shchedrin.

The Maya and Rodion tribute festival will conclude with a grand concert at the Bolshoi Theatre’s historic venue in Moscow on 16 December, Rodion Shchedrin’s birthday. As part of this special evening, the Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre will play the Cheeky Chastushki one-act ballet, which will form the core of the concert’s second half. Rodion Shchedrin described his own score as ‘essentially a toccata’ — that is, an intricate piece with a rapid tempo and a clear rhythm, ideally suited to showcasing the technical prowess of a ballet troupe.
